Interview Week!

It has been an exciting couple of weeks in grade five!  We have been getting a great deal accomplished and are racing toward the end of November at break neck speed!  Hang on!

OF SPECIAL NOTE
 • We have a special guest in our room until mid-December!  Her name is Miss Dupas and she is an education student from this University of Lethbridge.  Not only has she been teaching lessons in math, health and science, she has been a wonderful helper to everyone in our room.  We are lucky to have her!

I hope everyone had a chance to celebrate report cards this weekend!  This is an awesome group of kids, who work hard, and they have made great strides this year!

More news:
*There will be no school on the afternoon of Thursday, November 22nd as well as Friday, November 23rd. It is time for Parent/Teacher Interviews!  I would love to show off some of the work the crew has completed so please consider booking an interview using the following link:

*Remember this Wednesday is our Hot Lunch day and it is also the day of another special event- La Tire!  Ask your child for an explanation of the yummy fun planned for the day!

*We are collecting tabs off of pop cans to support a very worthy cause and a very worthy lady.  One of our regular guest teachers, Mrs. Byam, spoke to us recently about the Ronald MacDonald House and the service they provide to families who have children being treated at the Children’s Hospital in Calgary.  As a school, we are collecting pull tabs for the Ronald MacDonald House and I have provided the link below so you can read more about this incredible place:

Language Arts
The first Pirate Menu items were impressive and inspiring. The students had an opportunity to view their classmates’ work during a recent gallery walk.  The crew has been hard at work on developing ideas for the pirate paragraphs and we hope to have them ready for pirate parent perusal at interview time!

Math
Congratulations are in order to every student of the class on the latest math unit test!!  Wow!  Geometry is the next bog concept and Miss Dupas already has students completing vocabulary presentations!  Check out the math tab above for Geometry games!

Science
This week is a tidying up loose ends and review week for our weather unit!  The unit test is planned for early next week so please look for a review sheet to come home with a duo tang!

Health
We have been creating Learning Ladders.  If you would like to know what these are, they will be up in time for interviews this week!  Oh, the intrigue!

November 5th to 9th

Ready or not…November is here!  Just seems like yesterday when I was turning the calendar to October!

OF SPECIAL NOTE
 • Thank you for supporting our FEED the BUG campaign.  We raised a load of food for the food bank—how fantastic!

Our annual Remembrance Day assembly will be this Thursday, November 8th.  It will take place in the gymnasium at 10:30.

More news:
*There will be no school on Friday, November 9th as well as no school on Monday, November 12th for fall break.  Hope the weather holds up!

Language Arts
We are in the midst of completing items off of our Pirate Menu.  This week we begin pirate paragraph writing!  Very exciting!  Wednesday Work Day begins this week!  Students must select their first choice item and be prepared to work during class time on Wednesday!

Math
We have conquered three different ways to estimate large numbers and are becoming rounding professionals!  The students have a rhyme to help them!  Next up, adding and subtracting large numbers!  Please check in with your student this week to see how adding and subtracting is going.  Sometimes borrowing and re-grouping can pose a few problems!

Science
Quiz on Monday followed by information on thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes!  Oh my!

Art
Tornadoes are up and they look smashing!

October 22nd to October 26th

Finally a full week!  Time to get things done!

This week is FEED THE BUG week at MMH!  If you can, please send non-perishable food items to school so we can fill the bug and support the food bank!

Our book fair is on this week!  If students wish to purchase items from the fair, please send money in an envelope or baggie, which is labeled with the name of the student.  Our class is booked in for a visit on Thursday afternoon.  Yay!

More news:
*October 24th- Hot Lunch (the pizza is coming to those who ordered but please remember to pack other lunch items!)
*Halloween is coming!  Do you have a costume ready for the parade?

Language Arts
Simile poems should be typed up and ready for display by the end of the week!  Time to learn a bit more about writing skills in our journals this week.  As well, how did Cressida Cowell describe Skullions?  We will be looking for details in our novel this week!  It is what good readers do!

Math
The results of the first test are in and WOW!  Look for the first unit package to arrive home early this week!  We continue to explore BIG numbers and will be wrapping up our study of place value and the different ways to write BIG numbers by the end of the week.  Rounding and estimation are our next port of call!

Science
From the Latin cloud names, we move on to the Water Cycle, Air Masses and Fronts!

Art
Did you have a chance to check out our projects in progress?  Looking good!

Dancing and Place Value

Hi crew!  I promised to post the Cha Cha Slide clip that we used in PE after being buffeted around in the wind.  I am certain we will be grooving to it in the near future!  If you find any other cool dance videos, be sure to let me know as I like to dance, I like to boogie...

As well you might want to check out the new pirate place value game I posted in the Math Links section.  Get review of place value while under pirate pressure!  Have a super Friday off!

For my creative critters...

I do realize that it is an advertisment but the idea behind it is very cool!!  It is amazing how creative people can be!

October 15th to October 19th

PEEK AT THE WEEK: October 15th to 18th

Just some inspiration for PE this week.  Jumping rope takes some serious skill!

Mid October…yikes!  We are flying through grade five!

Please note that it is short week for students!  Thursday afternoon and Friday morning are staff learning days and so the children can stay home and play and I get to go to teacher school!  Dismissal will be at 11:45 on Thursday.

Welcome back to Constable Robinson this Tuesday!  He will be providing the second of our two B-Smart anti-bullying lessons.

Other Dates of Note:
October 18th- Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character day!
October 24th- Hot Lunch
October 25th and 26th- Book Fair!

Language Arts
As part of our focus on reading, we are going to ‘Search for Science’ in non-fiction books this week.  As well we will be completing our disgusting simile poems and reading more about Hiccup’s adventures on the Isle of the Skullions!

Math
Students completed their first unit test in math today and, if first appearances are any indication, they did great!  Whole Numbers is our next unit and I will be sending home a note detailing what they students are up against mathematically.  We are going to begin by writing, saying, and expanding numbers to one million.  Big number fun!

Science
Oh… our wind vanes were really no match for the mighty Lethbridge breeze.  Sometimes scientists fail.  However it is what they learn along the way that is important!  Next stop, clouds!

Art
Last week we briefly looked at the color wheel and discussed the importance of value to add depth to our pieces.  As we don’t have art this week, I will be sending their ‘tornadoes’ home with them for the long weekend so they can keep rolling on them!  They are lookin’ good!

Health
On top of having our anti-bullying lessons with Constable Robinson this week, we are also using our Health time to determine our personal pirate learning styles.  I have truly enjoyed watching the students wrestle with this assignment.  Their brains have been churning and each of them has had something to say about what they are learning!  Pretty cool!
