PEEK AT THE WEEK!:  SEPTEMBER 17TH  TO 21ST
Howdy pirate parents and crew of 5A!  Here is the scoop for the next week aboard our grade five ship!

Attention-Special Events!
  • We are pleased to have our Health Nurse, Sheena Watson, in for a chat on Tuesday of this week.  She will be here to inform us about the upcoming immunizations.  The hope here is to alleviate any stress the students may be feeling and to answer any questions the students may have.  Thanks to all the parents who have returned the AB Health Services envelopes!
  • Next on the agenda is our MAGAZINE FUNDRAISER assembly on Thursday!  This is one of our major school fundraisers so please consider supporting our sales drive this year.  I will be purchasing National Geographic Kids for our classroom library this year and it is HOT property when it arrives! Magazines make such a nice gift, don’t you think?
  • Our annual Terry Fox Walk is on Friday!  This is a favourite day of mine as we honour a Canadian hero and get a chance to meet our friends from Nicholas Sheran and Dr. Probe schools.  This is a morning of exercise so students need to be prepared with suitable clothing and great walking shoes.  Let’s hope the weather cooperates!

Language Arts
We will be continuing our pirate-y ways with Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third and just might have to complete a Reader’s Workshop activity pertaining to our novel this week.  Homonyms and synonyms are also on deck before the BIG 100 WORD test!  This test has been moved to Wednesday as this gives us a bit more time to tackle the homonym/synonym issue.  The journals are looking good and on Friday we will add another entry!
Math
After a division assessment on Monday, we will be beginning to learn about First and Second Hand Data and Double Bar Graphs (interpreting and constructing).  In addition, we prepare battle with our multiplication facts by knocking off what we know and focusing the fight to our ‘Naughty Numbers’- those facts that the students are struggling to recall!  By the end of October, students should be very, very comfortable with their multiplication facts to 7 and by January, their multiplication facts to 11.  Best of luck, mateys!
Science
Into wild weather we go!  We begin with an overview, including vocabulary and some introductory videos.  Students will also be recording the weather in Lethbridge and comparing it to another location in Canada.  Onward ho!
For what is up in Social Studies and French head on over to Ms. Bourassa’s blog:

While this doesn’t cover everything we are up to for the week, I hope it gives you an idea of the waters ahead! Arghhh, me hearties!
