PEEK AT THE WEEK!:  September 10th to 14th
Whoosh!  What a first week!  What a super start!  We set up class expectations and got a load of housekeeping out of the way last week and now we can begin getting down to it in grade five!
Here is what’s happening this week:

Language Arts
Monday marks the beginning of Reader’s Workshop aboard our ship.  Students will have plenty of opportunity to review what good readers do when reading and be able to respond to, not only their own books, but also to our first class novel.  Speaking of which, we are going to begin reading Cressida Cowell’s hilarious novel How to be a Pirate by the end of the week.  Check out the link on the side to learn more about her novels! You may be familiar with her work as her novel How to Train a Dragon was recently turned into a movie by Dreamworks!
Handwriting lessons begin this week as we work toward becoming solid hand writers by Christmas!   As well, the class will be hammering away at the Top 100 words listed in The Reading Teachers Book of Lists. It is absolutely essential that the students learn to spell these words and therefore they will be tested regularly until mastery is achieved.

Math
This week will be dedicated to a review of some basic addition, subtraction and multiplication facts.  An assessment will be given later in the week just to see how comfortable the students are with their facts.  In addition to review we are heading into our first unit.  Statistics and Probability will be no match for the pirates of 5A!

Science
What makes a scientist?  What is the scientific method?  As soon as we answer these questions (and have a little fun!), we begin Weather, our first unit of science!

And from Ms. Bourassa…

Social Studies
We will open our study of Canada by finding out what students already know about our great country...and the world! Students will also be preparing for and giving a 1-minute presentation of 'My Special Place in Canada'. Though we will review expectations for the presentation in class, I've included the guidelines here in order to help students get set for success.

Guidelines for informal oral presentation:
1) Pick any location in Canada. It may be a spot you’ve visited, somewhere a relative or special friend lives or a place to which you would like to travel someday.

2) Be prepared to:
a) name the place,
b) locate it on the big map of Canada and
c) explain why it is special to you!

3) You may choose to enhance your one minute presentation with a picture or other souvenir/significant object.

French
Bonjour les amis et bienvenue a la classe francais! /;{
Students will be discussing and sharing viewpoints about why learning a second language is important and will also explore why Canada is bilingual. We will review what students remember from their second language learning last year and begin a more formal review of concepts with l'alphabet!

Wowzers!  Hang onto your hat, crew!
This is going to be an awesome week!
