October 9th to 12th

PEEK AT THE WEEK: October 9th to 12th

Short week!  I hope that everyone had an incredible mini-break and had a chance to be with loved ones.  For those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving, I hope the leftovers help out with school lunches this week!

It was a brilliant day at the corn maze!  Heartfelt thanks to the many parents who gave their time and braved the weather to make this day a stellar one for our grade five crew!  Merci!

As well a BIG thank you to everyone who supported our major fundraising campaign.  Not an easy task to raise funds for a school and we appreciate those people in our school community who volunteer their time to make our school the best it can be!  Very awesome!

Language Arts
This week the focus in our reader’s Workshop will be two-fold.  First we are continuing to find ways to make deeper connections with our reading by connecting what we read to ourselves, to world events or to other books we have read.  Most students do this naturally but by making them more aware of these connections, the hope is that they develop a better understanding of what they are reading.  So far, so good!
Secondly we are looking at how authors use figurative language to enhance their writing and create images in the minds of their readers.  We will put this knowledge to good use by creating pirate simile poetry about our classmates.  Silly, and disgusting fun!  Look for these poems to appear near our pirate portraits outside our classroom!

Math
We are finishing up the probability section of our unit with some review this week just in time for the test on Monday!  First and second hand data, interpreting bar graphs, creating double bar graphs and the language of probability will be the focus of this assessment. Look for a duo tang to be arriving at a home near you on the weekend!

Science
The Beaufort Wind Scale is new knowledge for the crew and we have learned how meteorologists use the scale to measure the wind.  Up next will be the creation of a weather instrument—wind vanes!  Wonder how our vanes will hold up in the gentle Lethbridge breeze?

News about Social Studies and French? Take a peek at Ms. Bourassa’s blog:

If you get the chance to pop by our room in the next bit, please check out the pencil pirate portraits the students completed.  What a creative crew!  Up next for art will be a challenging project related to line and value while also learning about the color wheel.  Might take a wee bit but should be worth the wait!
